Just sticking this up for posterity. User Yann Solo made the following comment on the discussion page of their coldposted article:

Then get out of this site if you're going to downvote anything spooky, you clearly got lost here

Granted, this was in response to someone who'd just posted

and declined to elaborate. Still, if this becomes a trend, move right to warning. I've replied to the comment and told them to quit it.

Just sticking this up for posterity. Has the thought crossed any of our collective minds that we're getting a little gun shy on this sort of thing? If it causes a problem, yeah, get in there and do what you have to do, but good facking Lord, not every short or pithy statement needs a warning, and not everything that seems just a shade off-color is going to start some massive exodus from the site. There's keeping things civil, and being overly sensitive.

I stuck this up mainly because the comment thread mentioned would have been (and is now) deleted.

I've also received a PM over IRC about the issue, stating

last I checked, DrLyon (the guy who posted "2spooky4me -1") also has a bit of a record for trolling, so he probably needs watching too

People have messaged me before (both wikidot and chat PM) in regards to O5 threads over similar matters, mentioning patterns that they'd noticed but were generally overlooked because evidence of the behavior was deleted with the discussion pages.

I admit that I wasn't entirely sure about making this post in the first place. It does seem inconsequential. Thing is, if this person doesn't demonstrate this sort of behavior from now on, then the thread will just be buried and it shouldn't be an issue.

Yup. We don't actually do anything about the vast majority of these notes, which is how it should be, because they don't merit anything being done.

It has crossed my mind that it's potentially iffy to record every little thing that we notice, especially given how little many of these things are, but so far it's worked out better than 'simply ignore everything a user does until they piss off literally everyone and then we dredge up some trumped-up excuse to ban them', a tradition which goes back to at least 2010 and never seems to work out well.

Note: Doesn't mean there's not a third, better way, but so far I've seen none suggested and thought of none myself.
