Picture pages

So, I may be being a wet blanket here, but I don't see why we need a whole bunch of pages of 'SCP fuel.'

http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/document-12-e-5022a Here, peppersghost has added over a 105 images, and over here http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/document-17-e-3370318 DrBerggren has added his own… I'm all for either putting everything on one page, with tabs, if we really feel the need to keep them, or just stopping the process and telling people to drop their images in a photobucket and link it in a thread.

Again, may just be me being curmungeonly, but I don't see the point of this many image pages.

To be honest, I always kind of preferred the way Yoric did it, hosting it off-site so it doesn't weigh down our storage limits. (We still have those, don't we?) I don't care significantly one way or the other, but that's my immediate thought.

The picture pages don't bother me per se, except that all the recent ones appear to be in the fashion of "THIS IS MY PICTURE PAGE DON'T ANYONE ADD ANY BUT ME!!!" Less a resource and more a brag page ("Look at all the cool stuff I found!")

Frankly, I wouldn't mind consolidating them. Not into a single page, because jesus that'd load slow with all those pics, but down to a smaller number.

At time of writing, we have 5GB of space total on the wiki, and we've used about 0.4GB. And that's all 1800 or so SCPs (how many of them have pictures, I can't say) and SCP fuel pages. So I don't believe space is an issue. Aside from that, unless we see something like a tenfold growth in fuel pages, having them on multiple pages will actually be a bit easier for people looking to deal with editing the pages, particularly since after a while of looking at images you just sort of zone out.

I personally don't use SCP fuel images except on rare occasion (and personally think that better SCPs result if the idea comes before the image), but if people like them, I'm loathe to say they can't have them when they're not really causing any harm.

I do think that having authors have their own pages where they all upload "miscellaneous" stuff can lead to redundancy. I think it the process could be done better if we organized all the images into a few general categories, like "flora/fauna", "buildings", "artifacts", etc. I think that would be a productive venture.

An off site place for them might actually be a good idea. I still dislike a large amount of superfluity on the site, and those are pretty well the definition of it.

Someone with a Prime account could easily create a free-membership site and let people start uploading like mad if they wanted. We could set categories easily and even implement a tagging system so it could be easily searched.

Seconding this, though we might consider restricting membership to wiki members and we definitely want to make sure it stays moderated. If we really just let SCP fans in general upload pictures that they think might be neat, we'd a) probably end up with a lot of duplicates and b) run the risk of getting 4chan/etc. gore spammers. We've already had at least one on the wiki; no need to lower the standard for this site.

I don't really see what good they do if random people put them up with goofy names like DOCUMENT-PGD-343256-E and they're not organized or linked to in any way. A central page linking to all of them would help a little.

Tagging the pictures so they could be searched by topic would help a LOT. I've never gotten anywhere browsing random weird pictures with the goal of "Hey, I just thought of an SCP to go with this picture." but I would find it useful to go the other way i.e. I've got an SCP and need a good picture of a [REDACTED] for it.

I'm actually planning on buying a pro account this week, so I could make the site for ya. I'd also be willing to organize images we have on this new site/contact the authors who've made fuel pages. Whatever you need me to do, just say the word.

May I request a page, or a tag, or something, for images we'd have posted on my Document 12-H-1943687 — the one for photos to which wiki-members own the copyright? It'd be really nice to be able to distinguish those, still, even if that page hasn't had much traffic lately.

Can I suggest that instead of all the code that is used in the main wiki for images, something else is used?

e: I also had a few people who were volunteering to help organize add images, so I was gonna add them to the site as members so they can join. Not give them any mod/admin privileges, just make them little helper gnomes while we get things ready.

The deed is done! The visual recprds pages on the SCP wiki can be deleted now, as all of their content is now being hosted on the visual records site. We can probably use the hub page to redirect people to the site, sort of like how we do the Archives.
