I'm sure I'm not the first person to have realized that the site news is about six months behind now. Site news takes a lot of effort, and, more critically, requires rapid turnaround time in order to stay relevant - having the February site news in May is a bit behind the times.
In lieu of the current system, I'd like to suggest "This Day in SCP", which we can stick on the front page somewhere somewhat visible, or at least a link to it.
It would contain a list of SCPs and Tales that were published on that day in prior years. This has several advantages:
- Because we have a full year to add old SCPs/Tales to that 'day', there's less rush and opportunity to get behind.
- It helps the dire situation with tale readership where any tale linked elsewhere more than a month receives virtually no readership
- Helps less-visible and older SCPs get visibility on the front page.
And a couple disadvantages:
- It's a lot of up-front work to get to produce all 366 day pages initially, especially if we use the current blurb style from the site news.
- I'm not sure if its possible get that to change on a daily basis in a way that someone doesn't manually have to change it every day.
- Site news was a nice recap of the prior month and this may be a better supplement than a replacement.
This was talked about briefly in SSSC, with positive responses it seems. It's a lot of upfront work, but with a much slower turnaround time and incremental changes after the upfront work is done, it's viable alternative or supplement to the site news that exists.
