As a general assessment, the current About the SCP Foundation page tries to have one in-universe information tab, and one out-of-universe tab on some relevant info, guides and other pages. Unfortunately, this separation is rather poorly delineated, with the second tab "Writing Guide" is just straight up a misnomer.
The purpose of the rework is to more cleanly divide these two aspects of the About page, while also keeping them concise and short enough to not be overwhelming.
For the first tab, aside from some minor formatting and wording changes, the only major edit is getting rid of the "Foundation Operations" section. While not necessarily outdated, it definitely no longer encompasses all of the worldbuilding pages we've created since.
The information is offloaded to the Foundation Introduction page, which is much more up-to-date and presents them more compactly. Personally, I think having the first tab containing only the Administrator letter and the three core tenets of Secure, Contain, Protect is cleaner.
The second tab has a lot more changes, to bring it in line with what an About page should be like. To preface, there is a redirect to here from /about, which is a web standard for most places (Thanks to Dr Lekter for the suggestion.)
The "About the SCP Wiki" section's first paragraph has been minorly rewritten from "collaborative urban fantasy" to "collaborative speculative fiction" as per suggestion from Athenodora.
- Removed the paragraph containing link to all the Series, Tales and Canon, as those are already prominent on the side bar, and we shouldn't need to update it every time a new Series releases.
- Added a license note about our CC BY-SA status and a link to the License Guide, since those are important information that should be re-iterated here, IMO.
- Linked to the Frequently Asked Questions, since it seems logical.
Completely removed the "History" and "In-Universe Information" section:
- The latter is redundant, as mentioned about in the first tab.
- History is not directly relevant enough for most to know about, I think. I could see an argument to be made otherwise, but I'm choosing to leave it off for now.
For "Contributing to SCP Wiki", I changed the link to the Join page to the Guide for Joining instead, as you'd need to read it before joining anyway, and we should start setting that precedent here.
Added a link to the forums and IRC as well, to emphasize that you don't need to write to contribute, adding to the discussion works just as well.
Removed the link to Contribute, as the page in its current state is a bit of an organizational limbo, and not necessarily more informative or useful than all the guides we have. See this discussion for more details.
Furthermore, I don't want to encourage users to jump straight into making a page immediately.
Added a "See Also" section, pointing to all the important offsite resources that are intrinsically tied to our existence as well. I deigned not to include all the social medias, as they're already at the top of the side bar, and could clutter up the list.
Additionally, maybe we can have a visible link directing users on how to contact staff, but I'm drawing a blank on it, and Contact Us is already a standalone link on the top bar. (The messy state of Contact Staff notwithstanding.)
