We have long had the ability to add meta tags that to give the site an embed, but have not made use of this feature in the past. Our sister site, the Wanderer's Library, has made usage of this ability, and have a nice chat embed. Tech and IO want to give the main site this feature as well, which will make site links produce a small embed on Twitter, Discord, Facebook and other social media platforms.
These are the exact meta tags which will be added:
Of these, the first five are up for change, if anyone wants to tweak them slightly. The exact verbiage of the first two are the ones for any modification is primarily expected/warranted. (The logo is up for change, but was specifically chosen as a simple logo that would work on all backgrounds.) The image will be localized to the Sigma-9, should this proposal pass.
Downsides: I must mention the one major downside to this proposal: These meta tags would be applied to the whole site, creating a uniform embed appearance for all pages. While Wikidot does support the ability to set meta tags on a per-page basis, this is restricted to admins, and given the low number of admins and the potentially high number of author requests, this is not feasible. Further, since any edits are manual and cannot be automated, any changes to page-title/content/image would not be reflected and require additional admin attention. Most web pages have individual meta tags, which display the specific page title in the embed, along with information about that specific page. We will only be able to have a single, uniform appearance.
This discussion will be open for one week to staff of all levels.
