Yesterday, on the Staffchat Recaps Discussion Thread, CelesteKara does not match any existing user name (who is Junior Staff) made the following comment:
I do like that we are trying for more transparency. But it does bring me the question, why aren't Junior Staff allowed in staff chat then? At this point, it feels like there's no reason to keep them out.
This prompted discussion in Staffchat regarding the nature of Junior Staff, as well as how sensitive information should be handled in staff channels. A two-part proposal was suggested and quickly agreed upon by a majority present in AdCap. It was then brought to staffchat earlier today, in which most staff showed approval. It is now being ported to 05command for further and in-depth discussion.
The proposal is as follows:
- The separation of staff discussion channels into two: the current discussion channel would be renamed #sensitive-staff-discussion (as sensitive things are discussed in upscroll), and a new channel would be created labeled #staff-discussion. Staff would be expected to know the distinction and adhere to it, and ensure their fellow staff members do so as well.1
- Junior Staff would be given access to this discord's new #staff-discussion channel, #rules-channel, #staff-announcements, and #staff-questions.
There are a few benefits to this proposal, especially regarding Junior Staff:
- It allows Junior Staff to actively participate in wider staffwork, and understand the systems set in place.
- It allows OpStaff+ to meet and interact with Junior Staff, which greatly reduces the need for interviews (which are likely being retired next cycle), unnecessary bureaucracy in intra-staff communication, and introduces greater staff cohesion.
- It improves transparency amongst staff and allows for more people to be informed of staff happenings (if marginal).
- It helps separate sensitive information from regular staff ongoings, which has a number of minor benefits, one of which is security.
As for how this would affect the prior proposal, the recap team would likely not need or be able to report most of the conversation in #sensitive-staff-discussion, though they would likely watch it just in case a conversation strays into non-sensitive territory.
