Reasoning:
If you left as … OS, you may return to JS status with the acceptance of your team captain.
If you left as Moderator, you may return as OS under whatever team(s) you left, with the acceptance of your captain.
With the addition of the trial periods, I don't think that these demotions (for lack of a better word) are necessary. If staff as a whole don't think someone is ready to go directly back to their old level, they can go through the six week trial period instead of being moved down a level. I'm aware that a returning staff member can request to go through the trial period to be repromoted to their old rank, but that just feels like unnecessary complexity.
ETA: The edits to the post don't really address my main issue, in that I don't think the instant demotions add anything of value here, and that unless a majority of the team feels that a user can't return to their old position instantly, they should just be allowed to return directly to it. And honestly, the more I look into this, the more I feel it really needs some more substantial redrafting. Sections like the one about 'good standing' are largely skipped over (who is deciding whether or not it's good standing? etc.), and there's other decisions that I consider somewhat questionable (e.g a moderator who fails a trial period is still allowed to return as operational staff).
